The oaks this neighborhood was named for went in with the houses in the fifties and sixties, and the pools came later, in the seventies and eighties, dug into wide flat back yards on Blue Hills Dr, Springview Dr and Sweetwood Rd. Nobody at the time thought much about what a sixty-year-old willow oak would be doing to a pool deck.

Now they know. Acorns and leaf litter in the skimmer basket every week from August through December, a root running under the concrete apron and tilting it toward the water, and a heavy limb over the shallow end that the insurance company has started asking about. So the tree comes out. And now there is a thirty-six-inch stump three feet from gunite coping that cost real money, in a back yard where the only way in is a side gate.

Grinding within three feet of coping

A grinding wheel throws material hard and in a wide arc. That is fine in an open lawn and it is a genuine problem next to a pool, where the hazards are chipped coping, marked decking and a filter system that does not want several pounds of wood in it.

The setup takes as long as the grinding. A solid shield goes up on the pool side, the deck gets matted where the machine or a barrow has to cross, and the water gets covered if the stump is close enough that anything might carry. Skimmers get plugged. We work the stump from the far side wherever the geometry allows so the discharge is thrown away from the water rather than toward it. None of this is exotic, it is just the difference between an hour of prep and a pool service call.

Roots under a deck, and roots under a shell

These are two different conversations and it is worth separating them. Lateral roots running under a poured concrete deck can be cut back and ground out from the edge, and if a section of your apron is tilted, that is usually where the culprit is. We can open along the slab edge, take the root out and backfill.

Roots under the pool shell itself are a hard no. We do not chase anything beneath a gunite structure, and any crew that offers to is telling you something you should not want to hear. If your shell has moved, cracked or lost a tile line, that is a pool contractor's problem to diagnose before a grinder gets involved, and removing the stump will not fix it on its own.

Willow, water and white oak each grind differently

All three are here and they do not grind the same. Willow oak is even-grained and cooperative, and at this age they are usually solid all the way through, so a big one is simply a long steady job. Water oak at sixty-plus years is very often decayed or hollow in the heart, which sounds bad and is actually the easy one, because the wheel meets far less solid wood than the diameter suggests.

White oak is the one to plan around. Dense, heavy, hard on carbide, and a forty-inch white oak with a flared base occupies most of a morning and will want fresh cutters partway through. We price on species as well as size out here for exactly that reason, and if you can tell us which of the three it was from the leaf litter, the quote gets more accurate.

The studio out back and the paver drive around the side

A lot of Merry Oaks lots picked up a detached studio, shop or pool house at some point, and the route to the back is often a paver or stamped-concrete drive rather than grass. Pavers do not love a loaded machine turning on them, and a stamped surface will scuff.

We mat the turns and roll straight lines across anything decorative. If the only way in crosses something you are precious about, say so on the phone and we will look at whether the narrow machine or a longer barrow shuttle from a different angle makes more sense. It usually costs a bit of time and saves an argument.
