Bottomland trees do not make the stump you are picturing
This is a peninsula inside a bend of the Cumberland, and in May 2010 the river crested at 51.86 feet and put all of it under water. The trees that thrive here are the ones that shrugged that off: eastern cottonwood, silver maple, box elder, black willow and sycamore, all of them classic river-bottom species.
Those trees do not build the deep, tidy root ball people imagine when they think of a stump. They build a broad, shallow plate spread across soft alluvial soil, because there is no reason to go down when the water table is that high. A four-foot cottonwood can have a flare twelve feet across and be less than two feet deep. That plate holds water year round, and the wood in it stays wet and heavy. Pricing it off the trunk diameter, the way you would price an oak in a normal yard, gets the number badly wrong.
Wide, shallow root plates full of water
Cottonwood and willow are soft. They do not dull teeth and they do not fight the wheel. What they do is present an enormous surface area, so the job is a footprint job rather than a plunge job, and the clock is set by square feet of plate rather than by how deep we have to reach.
That also means the spoil volume is large and it comes off wet and heavy, closer to sodden pulp than to chips. It does not fluff up and dry the way oak grindings do, it packs. On a big bottomland stump we plan the spoil handling before we plan the cut, because on these lots you often cannot simply rake it flat over a hole that is already sitting in a low spot.
The approach bogs long before the stump does
The average parcel on Pennington Bend Rd runs well over five acres, so a stump is regularly a few hundred feet from anything paved, across ground that drains slowly and sits low.
We want two things before scheduling out here: a look at the route, and a couple of dry days. Where a soft stretch cannot be avoided, matting goes down. Where the whole approach is soft, we wait, because a bogged machine on a river lot is a recovery operation and not a small one. Homeowners on the bend generally understand this better than anyone in Donelson, because they have watched contractors learn it the hard way.
Flood grit is what ruins a set of grinder teeth
Every tree here that stood through 2010, and through the smaller events since, has silt, sand and river gravel driven into the fissures of its bark and packed into the root collar. It is not obvious to look at.
It is very obvious to a set of carbide teeth. Grinding grit is what actually destroys cutters, far more than hard wood does. So on the bend we wash or scrape the collar before the wheel touches it, take the outer bark off the flare where the grit lives, and only then start cutting. It adds fifteen or twenty minutes to a job and it is the difference between one set of teeth and three.
Staging, brush and the Music Valley problem
The road situation out here is its own consideration. Music Valley Dr backs up around Opry Mills and the resort traffic, Briley Pkwy access is what it is, and several of the driveways off Pennington Bend Rd are long, narrow and gravel with a turnaround at the end that a trailer will not use.
So we ask about the drive when you call. If a truck and trailer cannot turn, we drop the machine at the head of it and walk in. The other thing worth saying plainly: this is airport-adjacent Metro land and burning a brush pile is not a solution here, so whatever comes out either stays in a corner of the property or goes on the truck.

- How far the stump sits from the nearest firm surface, and what the ground between is doing
- Whether the drive will take a truck and trailer or the machine walks in from the road

- Where the spoil goes, kept well back from the bank so nothing washes toward the river
- Recent rainfall, because a wet week out here moves the date rather than the price

How do you price a cottonwood stump that is twelve feet across?
By the area of the plate and the time on the wheel, which is the only honest way to do it. A wide shallow cottonwood carries a lot of wood but it is soft wood, so it can come in below what people brace themselves for once they hear the measurement. Stand back, get the whole flare in one photo with something for scale, and we will give you a real figure.
The ground stays soggy most of the year. Can you grind at all?
Yes, with planning. We watch the dry windows, mat the soft sections of the approach and keep the machine on the firmest line to the stump. What we will not do is drive across saturated bottomland and hand you a rutted field. If your lot genuinely never dries, we look at working from a different angle or at a smaller machine walked in.
There is still flood silt and gravel in the base. Does that matter?
It matters more than anything else about the stump. Grit is what kills carbide teeth, so we clean the collar and strip the outer bark off the flare before starting rather than grinding through it. It is a short job and it protects both your price and our equipment. Any crew that quotes a river-bottom stump without mentioning it has not worked out here much.
My drive is a quarter mile of gravel. Will you get in?
Usually, but tell us what it does at the end. A long gravel drive is fine, a drive with no turnaround for a trailer is a different plan. Where we cannot turn, we unload at the top and walk the machine down, which costs a little time and no drama. A photo taken from the road looking down the drive answers it in seconds.
Could the grindings wash into the river?
Not the way we place them. Spoil goes well back from the bank, out of any drainage line, and on a lot with a steep drop to the water we default to hauling it off entirely. Loose wood chips on a river edge move in the first heavy rain, and neither of us wants to explain that to anybody.
